5 Reasons to Choose a Photojournalistic Wedding Photographer

Photojournalistic Wedding Nightingale Photography

Having been a professional photojournalist for 15 years with the San Francisco Chronicle, my passion has always been for storytelling. I began Nightingale Photography with the goal of telling beautiful wedding stories that highlight the authenticity and emotion of one of the biggest days of any couple’s lives.

With that being said, here are five reasons you should want a wedding photographer to take a photojournalistic approach if you’re getting hitched:

Preserve your memories

When you look back at your images, you want to remember what you were feeling in that moment, not what you were told to do by your photographer. I want the images we take on your wedding day to bring you right back to those moments on your wedding day.

A wedding day is a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Because each of these moments flows into the next, I don’t want to break up the day with staged photos. Instead, I want you to look back on your pictures and remember real events, like the moment you saw each other for the first time or the few minutes of quiet you snatched together after the ceremony before the rest of the family pictures.

Wedding photojournalism is unobtrusive

A big part of being able to capture memories, not poses, is my unobtrusive approach to photojournalism. This means I’m not going to jump in and readjust the way you’re standing or what you’re doing when you’re in the moment. I want those candid, real moments. That way, when you look back on the day, you don’t remember your photographer telling you to “look like you love each other.” You really did look like that all on your own!

Enjoy and relive your wedding day again and again

I want my couples to feel the same emotions they felt in the moment when they look back on their pictures. I want you to be able to open your wedding album or look through your wedding pictures and smile at stolen kisses or laugh at the little candid moments. Yes, it’s nice to have a few posed pictures to see that gorgeous dress or the two of you with the venue in the background—but that’s not what’s really important

That’s why I focus so much on the storytelling aspect of photography. I want you to be able to look back and relive the day in images. These pictures should make you say: “Remember when…”

Capture raw emotions, not contrived moments

My favorite part of being a wedding photographer is being able to capture genuine emotion. Sure, I will absolutely help with posing for the engagement session and for formal portraits, but that’s not where my focus is. And that’s not where your focus is when you’re getting married, either! You don’t want to spend all that time standing around when you could be spending time with each other.

People look their best when they aren’t anxious about photography

You can always tell the difference between forced smiles and genuine emotion. There’s something that comes from deep within you that shines through when you truly feel a smile all the way down to your toes. That’s so much more beautiful than anything I could pose for you—and it’s all because you aren’t worried about the way you look or what you’re supposed to be doing. I always try to capture the best candid moments that capture exactly those moments. You should look back on your wedding day and feel like you were glowing the whole time!

As a photojournalistic wedding photographer in Hampshire, I’ve had the pleasure of capturing some incredible moments for the most important day in a couple’s life together. It’s a style of photography I’m passionate about, and I hope that you will consider it for your big day, too!
